Why Is Your Small Business Website Falling Behind — And How AI Is Making It Worse

For years, “set it and forget it” was a reasonable way to run a small business website. You’d launch on WordPress, maybe check in once a year, and move on with running the business. That approach is no longer just outdated — it’s become one of the fastest ways for a small or mid-size business to lose control of its website, its customer data, and its local search visibility, and the reason is AI.

Vulnerabilities Are Being Found Faster Than Ever

WordPress powers over 40% of the web, which makes it the single largest target for attackers anywhere online — and 2025 was the worst year on record. Security researchers at Patchstack tracked 11,334 new vulnerabilities across the WordPress ecosystem last year, a 42% increase over 2024, with 91% of them found in plugins rather than WordPress core itself (Patchstack via ALM Corp). The median time between a vulnerability becoming public and the first real-world exploitation attempt is now roughly 5 hours. Not five days. Five hours. Hosting company firewalls only blocked 12–26% of actual exploitation attempts during that window, meaning most of the burden of staying protected still falls on the site owner keeping software current (ALM Corp).

AI Isn't Just Speeding Up Attacks — It's Finding the Exploits Too

This is the part most small business owners haven’t caught up to yet: AI is no longer just a tool attackers use to move faster. It’s being used to discover vulnerabilities that human researchers would never have found on their own.

In mid-2026, a security researcher at Searchlight Cyber pointed OpenAI’s GPT model at raw WordPress core source code and asked it to find a working exploit chain. In just over ten hours, at a compute cost of about $25, the AI identified a multi-stage remote-code-execution pathway — chaining a REST API flaw, a SQL injection, and a backdoor plugin upload into a complete site takeover. As the researcher put it: “No security researcher could have found and completed this exploit chain in 10 hours without AI” (Infosecurity Magazine). WordPress core zero-days like this have historically sold on exploit markets for up to $500,000. AI just made them dramatically cheaper to find.

It gets more direct, too. The popular “AI Engine” plugin — installed on over 100,000 WordPress sites specifically to connect AI assistants to site management — was itself found to leak authentication tokens through an exposed API endpoint, letting attackers grant themselves full administrator access (GB Hackers). The very plugins businesses are installing to adopt AI are, in some cases, becoming the vulnerability.

The Risk Isn't Just AI-Powered Attacks — It's Keeping Up With AI-Driven Updates

There’s a second side to this that’s easy to miss: the plugin and theme developers on the defensive side are racing just as hard as the attackers. As AI accelerates how fast vulnerabilities are found, developers are pushing security patches and AI-related feature updates faster and more frequently than ever, just to keep pace. That’s good for security in theory — but it only helps if those updates actually get applied, tested, and confirmed compatible with everything else running on your site.

In practice, that update treadmill becomes its own risk for businesses that aren’t actively managing it. Nearly half of the vulnerabilities disclosed in 2025 had no patch available yet, and even when a fix existed, businesses didn’t necessarily apply it right away — the Motors Theme vulnerability referenced above had a patch available for 24 days before mass exploitation even began (Adyog). A patch sitting unapplied in your dashboard protects no one. And blindly auto-updating everything without testing carries its own risk: rapid-fire updates, especially ones bolting on new AI functionality, can break plugin compatibility or open new misconfigurations, like the AI Engine token exposure described above. Either way — falling behind on updates or applying them carelessly — the business ends up exposed. Staying current isn’t a one-time task anymore; it’s an ongoing process of applying the right updates, at the right time, in the right order.

What This Looks Like in Practice

This isn’t a hypothetical, future-facing risk. In June 2026 alone, six separate WordPress plugins with 9.8-severity vulnerabilities (the top of the severity scale) were being actively exploited at the same time, collectively affecting over 1.14 million WordPress installations — popular tools like Kirki Customizer, Burst Statistics, and Breeze Cache among them (Adyog). One of those plugins had a patch available for over three weeks before mass exploitation even began — plenty of time for an update that never happened.

Why Small and Mid-Size Businesses Are Especially Exposed

Enterprise sites usually have a team watching this. Small businesses rarely do, and the data shows attackers know it. Premium plugins — the ones small businesses are more likely to pay for and trust — carried three times more known-exploited vulnerabilities than free components in 2025. Malicious file upload attempts nearly tripled during Q4, specifically targeting the holiday season when small business owners are the most stretched and least likely to be watching their site’s admin dashboard (ALM Corp).

The businesses most at risk are the ones that assume a website, once built, doesn’t need ongoing attention — especially owners running lean, without a marketing budget for a full-time developer or an expensive retainer contract.

The Damage Isn't Just a Hacked Site

A compromised WordPress site isn’t only a security problem — it’s an SEO and reputation problem that lingers long after the malware is removed.

Search engines quietly downgrade trust signals on sites that go unpatched, load slowly because of malicious redirects, or get flagged for spam. And even businesses that have effectively “abandoned” an old site because they assume no one visits it anymore are still exposed: if your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) on that site no longer match your Google Business Profile, Yelp listing, or BBB profile, that inconsistency actively works against your local search rankings — on every platform, not just the old site.
